Details required for an EV or OV SSL certificate

Organisation Validation (OV) and Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificates are issued only after verification that the applicant is a genuine legal entity, which comes from a business reputation firm such as Dun and Bradstreet. These certificates would be most useful when business validation and customer confidence is crucial to your business operations.

Note: Until recently EV SSLs also displayed the company name in green in the address bar. As of Chrome 77, Chrome has moved this this UI to Page Info, which is accessed by clicking the lock icon in the URL bar.

These SSL certificates require considerably more verification checking than a standard SSL certificate. In order to have an OV/EV SSL certificate activated you will be required to pass the following three checks:

1. Domain Verification - Adding a verification record to your website or clicking a confirmation link in an email sent to one of the following approved addresses for your domain:
  • admin@yourdomain.com
  • administrator@yourdomain.com
  • hostmaster@yourdomain.com
  • postmaster@yourdomain.com
  • webmaster@yourdomain.com

2.
Organisation Verification - Your business' contact details & legal business name are verified by a 3rd party such as Dun and Bradstreet, a business reputation firm.

3. Verification phone call - A phone call to the phone number listed in the 3rd party's records confirming details of the certificate.
